Are you married?

Sol’s older brother Jack moved down to Louisville from Chicago in June of 1955 to run a small grocery store on Barret Ave. that his family had purchased. By the following May, Jack had expanded the store into an adjoining retail space. Later that month, Jack sent for Sol to come to Louisville from Chicago and help out in the store. Sol enjoyed his new found independence and began to go to the mixers that were held Saturday nights at one of the big hotels downtown.

One of Sol’s duties at the grocery store was to make daily calls to the wholesale house to order produce. After several months of placing orders with Rebecca at the wholesale house, he got up the courage to ask her out on a date. Rebecca knew from his name that Sol was Jewish, but there was one more detail she had to check on. "Are you married?" Rebecca asked. Sol assured Rebecca that he wasn’t married and they arranged to meet on their blind date the following Saturday evening.

There was one thing that Rebecca didn’t care for, and that was closely cropped hair. Sol showed up sporting a new haircut and unfortunately for him, it was as short as short could be. Unbeknownst to Rebecca, there was one color, red, that Sol really didn’t like. So of course, Rebecca showed up wearing a bright red dress. Despite the missteps of their first date, Sol and Rebecca continued to see each other and were married the next year and had a baby boy and named him Charlie. That’s me.
